Tip of the Month

Be Sure to Stay Cool and Safe

Tuesday, May 01, 2012

With the warm weather just around the corner it is important to keep in mind some basic tips to keep your dog cool and safe this summer.  Make sure your dog is current on all of his/her vaccinations. Rabies can be carried by any mammal and you want to be sure your pet is protected if they should happen to interact with a skunk, raccoon, bat, or groundhog this summer. Be sure your dog is on a proper parasite/heartworm control program. Check your yard for plants and/or fertilizers that may be toxic to your pet. Always be sure there is access to fresh water and protection from direct sunlight. Never leave your dog unattended in a parked car on a warm summer day. The temperatures inside the car rise rapidly and heatstroke can occur in minutes. Signs of heatstroke include: panting, drooling, rapid pulse and fever. If your pet is showing signs of heatstroke seek medical attention immediately.
