Tip of the Month

Pet Obesity

Sunday, January 01, 2012

Obesity is a very common problem affecting cats and dogs. Overweight pets experience similar health concerns as we do. Orthopedic problems as a result of the excess weight bearing down on the joints can occur. Impaired heart function and difficulty breathing can also be a concern with obesity. Simply performing a physical exam can be difficult with the overweight patient. Animals become over weight because they take in more calories than they burn. Making sure your pet is on a premium diet appropriate for their life stage and activity level is crucial. Using an actual measuring cup to measure the amount your pet is consuming as well as keeping track of extra calories in treats can keep your pet on the right track to staying fit and trim. A routine exercise program will also benefit your pet physically and emotionally. Ask our doctors and staff to help you choose the appropriate diet and exercise program for your pet. Feel free to stop in once a month and weigh your pet to monitor weight loss progress.
